My time as GUTS Treasurer...
...was the most difficult and rewarding period in my life so far. In the fall of 2016, I started my at Gonzaga University where I grew in line with the Gonzaga mission statement towards a life of leadership and service for the common good. GUTS is Gonzaga's improvised comedy troupe which is not only entirely student run, but it is also the longest running improv group in the inland-northwest! My first two years in GUTS taught me the fundamentals of improv as well as gave me a community of peers from which I would gain lifelong friends. My third year in GUTS I had the honor of being elected Treasurer of GUTS council. My responsibilities included managing the club funds and profits from shows, managing social media accounts, collecting canned food donations which we gave to a local food bank, putting on monthly shows in the Magnuson Theater at Gonzaga, developing a mentorship program, designing advertisements, running open practices twice a week and teaching workshops on the weekend. Our hard work that year paid off when we were invited for the first time to attend an international improvised comedy festival at UBC in Vancouver Canada.
With every enjoyable moment GUTS brought, there was also essential growth. I learned the importance of social-justice, communication, and empathy in management. I gained the ability to speak confidently, think on my feet, and meet tight deadlines. Without GUTS, I would not have the same capacity to give and recieve constructive criticism, or learn by reflecting on my own mistakes. Though I am no longer a student at Gonzaga, the GUTS community will always remain a part of who I am.
